The Folio Society - Research

1. The Bull From the Sea

Mary Renault
Illustrated by Geoff Grandfield

I particularly like the bold use of colour and graphic shapes in these designs. Also, the slip cases are a nice touch, the folio society specialise mainly in making special edition hard back books - therefore include a lot of illustrated imagery and are very visually pleasing. They also produce a variety of collections by certain authors.

2. The King Must Die

Mary Renault
Introduced by Robin Lane Fox

Illustrated by Geoff Grandfield

This design is similar to the one for The Bull From the Sea, it demonstrates how a style for one book can be used across a set. The graphic shapes/silhouettes are very similar and easily recognisable, the only distinct change between this and the first book is the choice of colour.

3. The Folio Book of Ghost Stories

Introduced by Kathryn Hughes

Illustrated by David McConochie

This was one of my favourite examples of a folio society book. The atmosphere created is really eye catching and very appropriate for the content, which is clearly aimed at adults. This makes me think about whether I want the content I respond to within my work to be solely aimed at adults or more fluid in it's distribution to an audience.
