I drew up roughs straight away for the places I thought had the most potential for a final postcard design. I was drawn to the places with more obscure stories behind why they are abandoned and those that held exciting imagery for me to work with. Starting with more than 4 cities to develop has helped me to narrow down which ones I would like to take forward. Some of the cities/places I thought initially would be great to illustrate were a lot harder to design, whereas some of the ones I thought were a tad dull actually turned out to give me more ideas and less obvious outcomes.
