Task - Elephant, Figure, Butterfly

At first I actually found this task a lot harder than I thought it would be at the start of the session. Roughing a few different compositions helped me eventually come up with a design I was happy with. It was best to keep it simple and not over complicate the imagery.

As I enjoy narrative, I wanted to include some kind of small relationship between each element. I sneakily put a net in there too, to create a link between the figure and the butterfly. I gave the elephant angry eyebrows because in my mind, he was reluctant to help the girl catch the butterfly as he believes in freedom for all creatures. Her motives for catching the butterfly were not clear.

Developing Imagery

I merged a digitally produced very quick underlay image with my pencil drawing to give it some depth. At this point I am just testing materials.

Sketchbook

I drew out some very simple figures and textures in order to start experimenting with different ways of composing imagery. I am feeling a little lost with the project at the moment but I am sure once I get going with an idea I will start to feel better about the whole thing.

HELP

I was very confused about my project today. I feel like I know what I want to achieve but have no clue how to achieve it. My work at the moment just feels a bit pointless, its cute.. and that's not necessarily what I wanted to come across. A tone and atmosphere is something I am very aware that I struggle with, which is frustrating at times.

I need to draw on my own experiences rather than just pulling from nowhere - THAT IS MY NEXT CHALLENGE, to find out what that will be.

Little Character Dudes

Hedgehog

I had a lot of fun drawing a variety of the same character. Slightly changing features each time I drew was helpful in me developing something I was happy with. My favourite character on this page is the one with spikes only on the top part of the hedgehog's head.

There were many ways I could take this character as his hair is the main feature, I wanted the storyboards to reflect this. Experimenting with colour, hairstyles and action has given me many paths of where I could go next with this particular hedgehog.

Bird

Whilst drawing random bird characters I had an idea to incorporate a cuckoo clock. I am not sure just how feasible this is as a gif. It may be a bit too ambitious in the time we have to create the final outcomes but I like it as an idea.

Cat

Cats are one of my favourite animals (as are hedgehogs) so I didn't want to miss them out of my sketch booking for characters. They have such interesting movements, and I wanted to describe this in my drawings. If I were to move forward with a cat character I would probably either focus on a sleepy or playful theme e.g. chasing tail, stretching, etc.

Composition

To be honest I did rush this task a little bit because it was when I was having a bit of a meltdown about my Visual Communication project so my mind felt like it was elsewhere. However, when tackling this task I tried to remember everything we talking about during the last session. Depth and a line of sight where things I wanted to include in my imagery.

I did draw a series of very rough ideas and I think some of these could have been expanded on and become more interesting than the final design. I think that thinking about this more in my every day practice is going to help a lot when creating an impact within an illustration. I have already found that since the last session I have been considering layout and composition a lot more in other projects.

I See Faces Initial Ideas

I am very excited about this project and the freedom we have to explore with it. Today I enjoyed just playing around with shape and the possibilities of where this could go over the course of the week. The 3D element is also something I am very much looking forward to, as I enjoyed the Visual Language Task so much.
