Renewi Brief - Mural Roughs

Renewi Mural Brief
Create 6x Mural designs for an education centre.

Although mural designs aren't really relevant to my practice, I wanted to experiment with the subject matter of this brief. Historical themes really interest me, so when choosing out of six time periods I chose the earliest ones, which included stone age Britain, the Roman conquest and world war II. Working with a subject matter I feel passionate about really dictates the way the project develops. If I am enjoying it, I find that I experiment and play a lot more - whereas if I get a bit bored I am quick to finish the project and settle for a more obvious and less interesting outcome.

Sketchbook Roughs
I drew out a few initial ideas around the themes in my sketchbook first, before moving over to digital methods. As the size of the murals are so big, I felt that producing them digitally would be the best way of presenting them.

Character - 1. Egyptian

Cleopatra
To go alongside the bigger projects I want to tackle within Extended Practice I decided to set myself a challenge to illustrate characters, each one based on a theme or subject matter that I find interesting.

For the first image I started looking at the ancient Egyptians, and the clothing and culture of the time. I am often drawn to detail, so the intricacy of the Egyptian robes and jewellery was a lot of fun for me to play around with. I also wanted to incorporate the place of importance held by cats.

Egyptian Roughs

After visiting the British Museum I wanted to explore an Egyptian theme. As I want to continue to look at character (from my cop project), I won't spend too much time on each design - it's more of an ongoing process so I learn more about the way I approach characterisation.

Travelling Illustrator

I wanted to create an image that had something to do with being an illustrator who enjoys travelling and exploring. Especially after au pairing in the summer, the main thing I took from being able to spend my spare time drawing in an inspiring setting was how important this aspect of my practice is - taking the things I am passionate about and using them in my work. That what I wanted this image to look at.
